Life Insurance for Vapers

Can you get life insurance if you vape?

Yes, however, most insurance companies will class you as a smoker and charge you a smoker premium rate. As a broker, we have access to certain insurance companies that will treat you as a vaper and your policy will reflect that.

Is vaping the same as smoking when it comes to life insurance?

There are a few ways insurance companies may class you as a vaper. For example, if you vape nicotine then most will class you as a smoker. If you vape zero percent nicotine then certain insurance companies will class you as a non-smoker. However, if you have smoked in the last 12 months then you will also be classed as a smoker until that period has finished. Speaking to a broker can help you navigate the options and present you with the best route to go down.

Is life insurance cheaper if you vape?

With most insurance companies, life insurance won’t be cheaper if you vape as they class that vape has some form of nicotine in them, regardless of whether it’s a 0% nicotine vape. As a broker, we have partnered up with several insurance companies that will treat you as a vaper, appreciate that you’re healthier than a smoker and the policy will be cheaper.

How does life insurance for vapers work?

You will go through the standard medical forms and we would advise that everyone be upfront and honest around disclosing that you vape as this can invalidate your policy if you need to claim. However, as a broker we can potentially offer cheaper rates with lenders that include on their policy that you vape.

Do you have to declare vaping on life insurance?

We recommend you to be upfront and honest about whether you vape or smoke as if you were to put in a claim to the insurance company, they may then reject that claim as it is established that you vaped, but wasn’t initially disclosed on the form.

What happens if I lie about vaping/smoking on my insurance application?

We have found recently that a lot of new policyholders state they are a non-smoker or non-vaper, but are. At the end of the day, it’s the insurance company that will pay out your claim and if you’re not truthful on the form they have every right to reject your claim under non-disclosure which means they will not pay out your claim.

I have quit vaping/smoking, will this affect my life insurance?

If you have quit vaping/smoking within the last 12 months, you will still be classed as a vaper/smoker, this could be one day after taking out the policy or one day before your claim. If this is over 12 months or more then they will either class you as a non-smoker/vaper and you need to change your policy to reflect this. Furthermore, if you have taken out a 25-year policy and at the start, you declared that you vaped/smoked but have since stopped and it’s now over 12 months, you could be overpaying so it’s worth a phone call to your provider to conduct a review.

How can I apply and how can a broker help?

The easiest way is to either head to our website or give us a call and from there we can run through any situation you may be in and advise on the best policy for you. We can then advise on the best provider for you and start the process. The application process is very simple, once we have found the right provider and you’re happy, we make the application, they will look at your health and if it fits their criteria then you will be accepted.

Anything else we need to consider?

We would advise that you speak to us about potential policies with providers and that you be upfront and honest with your health and smoking/vaping habits. The insurance provider will write to your GP to look at your health records in the event you make a claim and will base the outcome of what is received as to whether your claim is successful or not.
